WestCOP’s White Plains CAP (Community Action Partnership) and the Thomas H Slater Center teamed up to offer two lucky students a 4-day learning experience called Camp Microsoft offered at the Microsoft store in the Westchester Mall. The two students participated in a 4-day camp, learning how to “Start Their Own Business”, using the various programs from Microsoft, such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
The campers were given a Microsoft Surface tablet to use, saving their daily work on a flash drive to be reviewed and continued the following day. They learned key business terms such as, start-up costs, profits, manufacturing, distribution, advertising, fundraising, and crowdfunding. This free YouthSpark Summer Camp is for ages six and up. The participants learn the latest technology from Microsoft while making new friends, completing creative projects, and gaining new skills that will prepare them for the future. On the 4th day, the two students presented their projects to the Microsoft Team and shortly thereafter, graduated.
“I am totally inspired by Ruben and Chenelle. They took time away from their summer vacation to further their knowledge. This camp will get them prepared for the upcoming school year. Not only did they learn the various programs like Word, Excel and PowerPoint but this also taught them to do public speaking and to get over the fear of doing a live presentation. Heather Miller, Executive Director of the Thomas H Slater Center and I are already planning another Camp Microsoft for the Slater Center’s Step Up Girls” said John Rossi, Area Director of the White Plains CAP.
